The Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 196 calls for service between Aug. 27 and Sept. 2, among them the following:
Aug. 27
Aid call: 5 p.m., (Auburn). Firefighters helped a male who had cut his finger with a kitchen knife and drove him to a medical facility for more treatment.
Aug. 28
Brush fire: 3:26 p.m., (Lakeland Hills). Firefighters checking out smoke in the area south of the Palermo Apartments in Lakeland Hills found a brush fire raging just south of the VRFA’s response area. Ultimately, the VRFA guys helped East Pierce Fire and Rescue extinguish the fire.
Aug. 29
Aid call: 12:48 p.m., (Lea Hill). Firefighters treated an older woman who had been suffering complications from her cancer treatments, and a private ambulance transported her in stable condition to Auburn Regional Medical Center (ARMC).
Aug. 30
Aid call: 12:56 p.m., (Auburn). Firefighters and King County Medics responded to a store near the SuperMall, where they evaluated an older woman who’d been suffering chest pains. A private ambulance transported her to ARMC.
Aug. 31
House fire: 6:29 a.m., (Algona). Firefighters responding to a two-story, single-family, wood-frame home ablaze in the 300 block of Fifth Avenue North saw smoke and flames licking the roof but all the occupants safely outside. Firefighters snuffed the conflagration and saved as much personal property from water damage as they could. Investigators soon determined that unattended cooking on a range top had burst into flames before jumping through the hood and snaking into the attic. Nobody was hurt. The Red Cross helped the homeowner find future housing.
Sept. 1
Vehicle accident: 9:02 a.m., (Algona). Upon learning that a semi-truck had hit a car, firefighters hustled to the scene and one person with minor injuries.
Sept. 2
Brush fire: 7:47 p.m., (Green River College). Firefighters from the VRFA and Kent Fire Department responding to a conflagration on the north side of Highway 18 just east of the Green River Bridge found two fires that had merged and were consuming grass, brush and trees on the crest of the ridge behind Green River Community College. Firefighters checked the fire and put out the hot spots. They returned early the next day to finish their cleanup.
