Legislature adjourned, but work continues | Rep. Skip Priest

Now that the 2009 Legislature has adjourned, this is a good time to remind you that the work we do on your behalf continues year-round. Just because the Legislature is not meeting, doesn’t mean good ideas cannot be worked on right now. The reality is citizens need assistance all year, not just the few months we gather in Olympia.

Many of you will see me throughout your communities this summer talking about the legislative session, answering your questions and listening to your concerns. I do this to ensure the ideas and solutions for the 30th District come from the people who live in the district. It’s your government, and my goal is to make sure policies reflect the communities’ values and priorities.

The best ideas and solutions come from you. For example: When education issues come up, my first priority is to consult with local education experts, parents and teachers to fully understand what should be done to make sure students come first. The same is true for every issue. I want to hear from you – how we work together to make our communities stronger, more dynamic and responsive to the people living in them?

My legislative assistant, Steve, is also available to assist constituents year-round. We are always available to help individuals and small businesses navigate state agencies, sign up for or find services and answer questions. We are here to help. In these difficult economic times, it’s more important than ever that folks have resources to find the help they need.

One example of constituent assistance came about on a community walk when a mother and daughter relayed the difficulty they encountered while trying to enroll in the state’s health care plan. The next day my legislative assistant was able to help enroll them in the right health care plan to fit their needs. This is the kind of work we do all year, and we encourage you to contact us if you need a hand working with a state agency, or understanding new laws and regulations.

Our goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of those we represent. We have an incredible opportunity in this economy to reshape state government, but I need your input. I am always available to meet with constituents and local civic groups to discuss legislative issues and brainstorm ideas for future legislation. Please contact my office at 360-786-7830 anytime.

Together we can make a difference – I am honored to serve as your 30th District State Representative.
