The Auburn Trojans had no trouble recapturing district bragging rights on Friday with a 49-7 South Puget Sound League 3A win over Auburn Riverside at Auburn Memorial Stadium.
Playing as the visiting team, the Trojan (1-1 league, 2-2 overall) offense scored on its first possession and never looked back, racking up 35-0 halftime lead on the way to victory.
“They’re a different team and we’re a different team, but it’s always nice to win this one,” Auburn coach Gordon Elliott said. “I thought our kids did well and kept a pretty good level the whole game. That’s what we’ve been working on and I felt good about that.”
In typical Auburn fashion, the Trojans kept it on the ground, running the ball 38 times for 330 yards, while taking to the air just four times.
Junior Justin Ioimo had six carries for 75 yards, with two touchdowns.
Malik Williams added four carries for 60 yards and two touchdowns and Dillon O’Grady and Avery Wade both had 42 yards rushing.
Wade and Deshawndre Appleton added a rushing TD each.
Hallelu Tiauli also scored a touchdown for the Trojans, running back a fumble return 50 yards.
Auburn Riverside’s (0-2, 0-4) lone score in the contest was a 10-yard TD run by quarterback Kyle Suttrick.
The Ravens won last year’s meeting of the two teams 20-7.
“It feels great to get this back,” Auburn senior Nick Kaatz said. “We played great. We were confident and played like we knew what we were doing. We were all in the game. We just took it to them and never stepped off their throats, we were just working hard all game.”
Auburn will travel to Enumclaw (1-1, 2-2) at 7 p.m. next Friday with Auburn Riverside hosting Auburn Mountainview (2-0, 4-0) at Auburn Memorial Stadium.
