No. 8 Auburn was unable to hold onto a 12-point fourth quarter lead on Friday, falling 29-19 to Kentwood in the South Puget Sound League North 4A opener at French Field in Kent.
The Trojans opened up a 9-0 lead in the first quarter with senior quarterback Brier Atkinson scoring on a 14-yard run, and the Auburn defense capitalizing on a bad Conqueror snap for a safety.
Kentwood responded in the second quarter when Kyle Capperauld returned a fumble 90 yards for a touchdown.
In the third quarter, the Trojans stretched their lead with Dillon O’Grady returning a fumble for 40 yards and a touchdown and kicker Caden Borden booting a field goal.
Then the wheels fell off for Auburn, with Kentwood scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter.
Brian Campbell notched a 1-yard touchdown run with Brandon Systma adding 21- and 64-yard touchdown runs for the Conquerors, putting the score at 29-19.
The Trojans were hampered in the contest with 12 penalties for 100 yards, including two touchdowns called back on penalties.
Auburn looks to get back on track when it hosts Mount Rainier (0-1 league, 0-1 overall) next Friday at 7 p.m. at Auburn Memorial Stadium.
