The Auburn Mountainview High School athletics program has filled three vacant coaching positions:

Volleyball

The Lions will vie for their ninth straight state 3A tournament appearance under the guidance of new coach Telia Peterson.

Peterson comes to Auburn Mountainview from her native Texas, where she coached at the middle school, club and collegiate levels for five years.

Most recently, Peterson coached at Wharton County Junior College.

Peterson played volleyball at Boise State University as an outside hitter. She graduated from Boise State in 2006 and was a math teacher in the Houston school district.

The Lions placed fifth at the 2012 state tournament under coach Nicole Thompson.

Boys basketball

Thomas Ostrander takes the helm as coach.

Ostrander comes to Auburn by way of Bonney Lake, where he was the girls basketball coach for six years. During that time, he led the Panthers to six straight postseason appearances and two state 3A tourney appearances.

Ostrander was a three-sport athlete (soccer, basketball and football) at East Valley High School in Yakima and played football for Washington State University, including the 2001 Sun Bowl, the 2003 Rose Bowl and the 2003 Holiday Bowl.

The Lions, under Terrance Johnson, finished third in the South Puget Sound League 3A with a 5-5 record, 11-15 overall last season.

Wrestling

Coach Jay McGuffin takes over the Lions’ program next winter.

McGuffin comes to Auburn Mountainview from Chelan High School, where he taught and coached wrestling for eight years.

McGuffin earned Caribou Trail 1A League Coach of the Year honors three times. He was twice honored as regional Coach of the Year.

Under McGuffin, the Mountain Goats finished in the top 10 four times at the Mat Classic, with four individual state champions.

McGuffin started wrestling at age 5 and competed collegiately for the University of Oregon and Boise State, where he competed in the Pac-10 championships and NCAAs.
