Saturday was a big day for the Auburn Mountainview girls track team as the Lions posted three district champions and grabbed third place as a team at the West Central District III 3A Track and Field meet at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma.
The Mountainview 4×100-meter relay team easily outdistanced the competition at the meet, with Abi Alfrey, Alexi Morton, Whitney Echols and Erika Lombardo posting a first-place 48.85 time to grab the district title and qualify for next weekend’s state meet. The time is the best 3A 4×100 time in the state this season, and beats the Lions’ previous best time of 49.89.
In addition to qualifying with the relay team Morton, a senior, also earned district titles in the long jump – with a 17-foot, 2.75-inch distance – and the 100 hurdles – with a 15.10 time, a full second faster than second-place finisher Carley McCutchen of White River, who posted a 16.10.
Morton also qualified in the 100 dash with a second-place 12.99 time.
Lombardo also qualified to move on to state in the 100 with a third-place 13.00. Lombardo also will compete at state in the 200, where she was sixth with a 26.58.
The Mountainview 4×200 relay team – with Lombardo, Echols, Maya Wagers and Alayna Wagers – also moves on with a third-place 1:45.77 time.
Junior thrower Marissa Paopao also punched her ticket to state with a second-place finish in the discus, posting a 117-00 toss.
The Lions were third in the team competition with 58 points. Camas finished first as a team with 104.5 points.
The Washington State 3A Track and Field Championship Meet begins at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma. For schedules and more information visit the Washington State Interscholastic Activities Association track and field Web site.
ALSO: Mountainview’s Josh Melu also qualified for the state 3A meet with a seventh-place finish in the long jump. Melu posted a 20-10.00 finish to move on.
