Despite having to scratch one of their best gymnasts just one event into the meet, the Auburn Mountainview squad had no problem socking away the SPSL sub-district meet team title this past weekend at Kentwood High School.

The Lions scored 163.20 team points to win the title, despite having to do without sophomore standout Natalie Hostetter, who suffered a knee injury on the vault.

“She landed a little short on her first vault and was having some pain in her knee,” Auburn Mountainview coach Jayme Hostetter said. “She tried to do the second vault and the same thing happened. And her knee was beginning to swell, so we decided to scratch her.”

The Lions were led by senior Ashley Perkovich who came away with second-place in the all-around with a 36.650 score. Perkovich finished first in the vault and the floor exercise with a 9.6 and a 9.5, respectively. She also grabbed second on the bars and third on the beam.

“I was hoping we would okay and to be honest we’d have to really bomb to be in that spot [not taking first],” Jayme Hostetter said. “We had some really good performances from some of the girls and then we have some things to work on. We need to get the nerves out before we get to state.”

Mountainview’s Kendra Alexson finished seventh in the all-around with a 31.80, with teammate Sarah Fiksdal taking home 27th all-around.

Now the team is waiting to get word back from the doctors on whether Natalie Hostetter will be able to compete at the West Central District meet this weekend on their home turf at Auburn Mountainview High School.

“We’re just trying to rule out the big things,” Jayme Hostetter said, adding that a doctor had already determined that the injury was not an ACL tear.

“We might have her do a couple of events this week,” she said. “I think it’s [the competition] going to be about the same, so it should be okay to hold Natalie out.”

The district meet gets underway at 10:15 a.m. this Saturday at Auburn Mountainview High School.

ALSO: The Auburn Riverside gymnastics team came away from the sub-district meet this past weekend with a fifth-place team finish with 162.575 points. The team was led by Rebecca Turnbow, who finished fifth in the all-around with 36.075. Turnbow was second on the uneven bars with a 9.225 score. Kylee Smith finished tied for 18th all-around and Paige Crawford was 26th all-around. The team will compete at the district meet this Saturday at Auburn Mountainview High School. …Auburn gymnast Alexis Moore finished 14th overall at the sub-district meet with 33.450 points. The Trojans were 10th in the team competition with 146.950 team points. Qualifying for the district meet from Auburn was BaileeJo Johnson, in the floor exercise and Tyler Garner on the balance beam.
