The Auburn Mountainview wrestling team earned a pair of first-place finishes at this past weekend’s South Puget Sound League 3A Sub-Regional competition at Auburn Mountainview High School.
Senior Dakota Weir – a returning Mat Classic participant – pinned Bonney Lake’s David Smith at 2 minutes, 35 seconds in the 285-pound title match.
The win secures Weir a berth in next weekend’s West Central District III Regional wrestling tournament, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bonney Lake High School.
Also finishing first was sophomore Antonio Corea, who secured the XXX-pound title with a pin at 1:09 over Decatur’s Joe Johnson.
Likewise moving on to the regional tourney are freshman Brahm Trujillo (second at 120 pounds), sophomore Dylan Foley (fourth at 126) sophomore Joey Santos (third at 138), junior David Boone (second at 152) and sophomore Andre Pellow (fourth at 285).
“We’re a young team,” said Lions coach Adam France. “That had a bearing on how some of our guys wrestled. I’m happy with most of our performances though. Corea was not a surprise. He’s a strong, quick, determined athlete. He is only a sophomore, and we look for good things from him this year and in the future.”
Auburn Mountainview finished fourth in the team competition with 162.5 points.
Decatur was first with 344.5.
