Auburn Mountainview survives shootout with Sumner, 42-35 | Prep football

Auburn Mountainview remained undefeated at 4-0 with a South Puget Sound League 3A win over Sumner on Thursday night at Auburn Memorial Field.

Quarterback Gresch Jensen put Auburn Mountainview ahead for good with an 8-yard touchdown run with just 1 minute, 40 seconds left on the clock Thursday night, giving the Lions a 42-35 South Puget Sound League 3A victory over Sumner.

The Lions responded with seconds to go, stopping the Sumner offense cold at the 10-yard line.

The win gives the Lions a share of first place in the SPSL 3A with Peninsula, both with 2-0 league records.

After a scoreless first period, the Spartans and Lions traded blows, with the game tied at 28-28 going into the fourth quarter.

Jensen, a junior, finished the game with four passing TDs, with junior Ki’jan Weisinger on the receiving end of three of those. Junior Vaughn Daggs caught the fourth touchdown pass.

Jensen, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound second-year starter, finished with a 118.0 QB rating, and was 28-of-45 for 372 yards. He also carried the ball 10 times for 33 yards and two TDs.

Weisinger finished with eight catches for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Daggs pulled in eight catches.

Sophomore Bittner Wilson had 11 carries for 73 yards.

On defense, senior linebacker Jason Sele led the way with 12 tackles, including three for losses. He also had a forced fumble and a recovery.

Wilson also recovered a fumble forced by senior Roman Grinchuk.

Robertson notched 12 tackles, and senior Aeron Watson added 11 tackles.

Auburn Mountainview plays Auburn Riverside in an SPSL 3A game at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at Auburn Memorial Stadium.
