The 3A tennis standings are starting to tighten up as Auburn Mountainview took down Todd Beamer High School, 3-2, at home on Sept. 28.
The match seemed close based on that 3-2 score, but the Lions made quick work of the Titans, clinching in the third match of the afternoon.
Jayden Low and Dominic Weir took care of their singles matches relatively easily, only dropping one game in the four sets against the Titans. Low double bagel’d his opponent 6-0, 6-0, while Weir dropped a single game in the second set, winning 6-0, 6-1.
With those matches ending fast, the Lions had an advantage for the rest of their doubles matchups knowing they just needed one to clinch the win.
The duo that won the match for the Lions was the third doubles squad: Imani Brown and Vinh Nguyen were the combo that took down the Titans.
“Our record was a little down and we hadn’t been playing that well together. But today everything clicked and we played really good together,” said Brown.
They lost their first set, 6-2, but were able to bounce back with a huge second set, not letting Todd Beamer win a single game.
“We felt motivated. We wanted to win and we came back and we won,” Nguyen said.
“After we won the first and second game in the second set, we just kept the momentum,” Brown said. “We were just feeling it.”
What got them going in the right direction was consistency.
“Our volleys and our serves were working well. We got shots in cross-court and everything,” Nguyen said.
Even though they were the deciding match, the two didn’t feel as much pressure to win as one would think.
“I had a lot more fun today. I didn’t feel nearly as nervous,” Brown said. “Same here,” his doubles partner Nguyen said.
The Lions’ next match is on Oct. 5 against Kent-Meridian on the road.
