Auburn Mountainview’s Christian Rotter led the pack of local runners at last weekend’s state cross country championship meet in Pasco, finishing 16th in the Class 3A race in 15 minutes, 50.81 seconds.

Rotter’s time in the 3.1-mile course at Sun Willows Golf Course set a personal record for the sophomore runner, shaving more than 30 seconds off his previous best this season of 16:37.88.

Rotter, who competed in the state meet at Sun Willows as a freshman, said this year’s course was virtually unchanged.

“This year was a lot more relaxing and easier because I’ve already run the course and knew where the turns were and where they went,” he said. “Also, I had a better idea of myself.”

Lions junior Jonah Zucati also competed in the meet, coming in 89th with a time of 17:12.93.

The race was the fastest ever for a boys 3A state meet, with Tanner Anderson from North Central coming in first with a 14:44.83 and Seattle Prep’s Joe Hardy taking second with a 14:45.16.

“It was a pretty fast race,” Rotter said. “I don’t know how it affected the runners behind, because they were behind me and I don’t look back. I just tried to keep my eyes on the top-two and not let anyone pull away from me. Because once they pull away from you, you’ll never catch them.”

North Central won the team competition with 41 points.

In the girls 3A competition, Auburn Mountainview senior Allison Hammer finished 63rd with a 20:12.51 time.

Lakeside’s Andrea Masterson won the girls race with a 17:50.83.

Glacier Peak took home the team title with a 102-point finish.

Auburn Riverside senior Rachel Covey capped her prep career with a 91st-place 19:59.39 time in the girls 4A race.

Alexa Efraimson from Camas smoked the competition in her race, beating second-place runner Lindsey Bradley of Richland by almost a minute.

Efraimson was first with a 17:01.10, and Bradley was second with a 17:56.57.
