The Auburn Mountainview girls basketball team slipped by Port Angeles on Friday 38-39, earning themselves another game and another shot at qualifying for the Washington State 3A championship tournament.
The Lions (15-6) jumped out to 12-6 lead in the first quarter and outlasted the Roughriders to win the loser out West Central District III tourney contest.
Junior post Stephanie Smolinski led Auburn Mountainview with a game-high 14 points, with junior Ida Huners chipping in with eight. Freshman Aalia Braboy and junior Angel Pele added five points apiece.
The Roughriders were led by Jessica Madison with 13 points and Emily Cook with 10.
The win moves the Lions on to the next round of the consolation finals in the district tourney and game against South Puget Sound League 3A Division rivals Enumclaw (14-8).
The two previous meetings of the teams were split, with Enumclaw beating Auburn Mountainview 40-37 on Jan. 6 and the Lions taking their Feb. 3 contest 51-44.
Tip-off is 6 p.m. this Friday at Clover Park High School in Lakewood.
The winner of the game will play the winner of the Bonney Lake (18-5) versus Hazen (15-7) game for the fourth and sixth seeds into the state tourney.
The loser will face the loser of the Hazen versus Bonney Lake game in a loser out contest for the seventh seed into the state tourney.
Both games will be played at Auburn High School on Saturday.
