Junior Shantell Jackson helped lift the Auburn Riverside girls past Bellarmine Prep 65-47 in non-league action at the Valley Medical Showcase at the ShoWare Center in Kent today.
Jackson earned player of the game honors for her performance, which included a game-high 19 points with eight rebounds, five steals and two assists.
The Ravens (8-1 South Puget Sound League North 4A, 12-1 overall) led the Lions (10-3) 28-19 at the half. In the third quarter Bellarmine Prep chipped away at Auburn Riverside’s lead, pulling to within six points. Jackson, however, helped Auburn Riverside pull away, scoring 11 points in the third quarter.
Senior Jalea Crump added 13 points and five rebounds and senior Karina Gee chipped in with 11 points.
“I’m really pleased with how hard our kids played,” Raven coach Terrance Johnson said. “They’ve been playing harder and harder and they’re figuring that piece out. And today we really competed well. Our focus was really good. In terms of carrying out our game plan, they did really well at that today.”
“We expected them to be really tough,” Crump added. “Coach said they were really good attackers and that we should make them shoot. And it worked, they didn’t hit very many jumpers.”
The Ravens will host No. 3 Mount Rainier (10-0, 14-0) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in SPSL North 4A action. Auburn Riverside’s only loss of the season was a 61-48 league loss to the Rams on Dec. 8.
ALSO: The Auburn Mountainview (10-5) boys fell 34-32 to the defending Washington State 1A Cascade Christian Cougars (7-5) in game two of the Valley Medical Showcase. After trailing 17-12 in the first half, the Lions pulled even with the Cougars at 32-32 with less than three minutes to play. The Lions, however did not score the rest of the game. Senior Marion Beauchamp led the Lions with nine points in the contest. J.J. Lacey and Drew Sleezer (pictured below) notched six points apiece. Cascade Christian’s Shawn Spencer had a game-high 13 points. Auburn Mountainview resumes play in the SPSL 3A at 7 p.m. Tuesday hosting Decatur (4-0, 10-4).
