The trophies just keep coming for Auburn grappler Jake Swartz. This past weekend Jake captured the United States Junior Nationals Freestyle 189-pound title in Fargo, N.D. with a decision victory over New Jersey wrestler Max Huntley, 1-1, 0-2, 3-0. Prior to that Jake finished third in the U.S. Junior National’s Greco-Roman tournament, also conducted in Fargo.
From July 17 to 25 Swartz competed against the best wrestlers from around the country, according to his father, coach and workout partner Brad Swartz.
“It’s actually the world’s toughest and biggest national tourney,” Brad said. “It’s a qualification tournament, you have to win your own state title, either in prep or Greco-Roman or Freestyle. It’s the absolute cream of the crop, most of the wrestlers have won multiple state titles. The 189-class was absolutely stacked. But that didn’t phase him, he was ready to roll. He deserved it, because he worked really hard.”
According to Brad, Jake wrestled 16 matches total, eight Greco-Roman and eight freestyle in ten days.
“Every single match is like a national title,” Brad Swartz said.
In addition wrestlers have to make weight four times throughout the tourney.
“It takes incredible endurance,” he added. “It’s just psychological war. It’s a tournament of attrition.”
The title caps an impressive year for the Boise State-bound wrestler.
Earlier this year Jake finished his prep career with his third Washington State title at Mat Classic, ending the season with a 38-1 record. Previously Jake was first in the 3A 171-pound class as a junior with a 40-1 record and first in the 3A 152-pound class with a 40-1 record as a sophomore.
