Auburn’s Swartz captures Spud Walley Invitational

Talent was in abundance during Saturday’s Spud Walley Invitational at Sedro-Woolley High.

Five of the 10 teams in competition finished among the top 10 at state a year ago. Put another way, any wrestler who came away with a golden performance was doing plenty right.

Boise State-bound Auburn star Jake Swartz, as usual, was doing plenty right.

Swartz was the lone Trojan to bring home an individual title, outmuscling Tahoma’s Nick Bayer in the 189-pound finale, 13-7. It was one of the most anticipated matchups of the tournament. Swartz won the 171-pound Class 3A title last year while Bayer, a junior, won the Class 4A 160-pound crown.

“(Nick) wrestled him tough, but Swartz is just so powerful and strong,” said Tahoma coach Chris Feist.

Swartz cruised into the finals with a pair of pins.

The match between Bayer and Swartz is likely the last time the two South Puget Sound League North Division standouts will see each other this season. Swartz has indicated he’ll remain at 189 this season while Bayer likely will be down to 171 in the coming days.

Class 1A powerhouse Orting walked away with the team title with 229 points followed by last year’s Class 3A champions Enumclaw (213) and Auburn (164).
