Auburn’s Thornquist fights through consolation bracket at district to punch ticket to state | Girls Tennis

Auburn freshman Lauren Thornquist earned a berth in this week’s state 4A tennis tournament with a sixth-place showing in West Central District play last weekend at Tacoma’s Sprinker Recreation Center.

Thornquist, the South Puget Sound League Central Player of the Year, finished the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record and earned the No. 3 seed out of the SPSL into districts.

At district, Thornquist lost 6-2, 6-1 to Union’s Jelena Vidovic in the first round, forcing her into the consolation bracket.

In her second match, Thornquist eliminated teammate Sandi Mihaylova, 6-2, 6-4.

Consequent victories over Kentlake’s Kara Ikeda (7-5, 6-3) and Jefferson’s Cindy Park (6-4, 6-1) set up Thornquist’s match against South Kitsap’s Kalyn Skjonsby for the fifth and sixth seeds into the state tourney, with Thornquist falling 6-3, 6-1.

State matches begin at 8 a.m. Friday at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

ALSO: Auburn senior Sandi Mihaylova dropped his two district matches, losing in the first round to South Kitsap’s Kalyn Skjonsby, 6-3, 6-0, and to teammate Lauren Thornquist, 6-2, 6-4. Mihaylova finished the year with a 7-1 record in the SPSL Central. … The Auburn doubles team of senior Peyton Prothero and junior Karen Wentzke went two-and-out at the district tourney. Prothero and Wentzke, who had a 7-1 SPSL record, lost 6-1, 6-2 in the first round to Tahoma’s Sierra Southworth and Maddie Turek and fell 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, to Federal Way’s Lauren Lang and Mina Park in the consolation bracket. … The Auburn girls team finished the season with a perfect 9-0 record, capturing the SPSL Central title. … For Auburn Riverside, junior Jessica Lancaster dropped a pair of district matches, losing in the first round to Olympia’s Katelyn Orchard 7-6, 6-2 and falling 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to Jefferson’s Breanna Ziccarelli in the consolation bracket. … The Raven doubles team of Jessica Hall and Tralayna Haslett – both seniors – bowed out in two matches, losing 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Bellarmine Prep’s Gracie Treleven and Ashley Yates and falling to Kentridge’s Kyanna Esber and Alissa Lee in consolation play.
