It didn’t take long for for Auburn senior James West to tie his school’s season pin record at this last weekend’s Mat Classic XXV wrestling championships at the Tacoma Dome.

Just 1 minute, 30 seconds into his first round, 182-pound match against Davis’ David Perez, West earned his 27th pin of the season.

“It feels pretty good,” West said after the match. “I passed my coach (former Trojans wrestler and current coach Dennis Herren) last week. I was thinking about it (tying the record) a little bit coming in, but mostly I was just thinking about winning.”

In the second round, West was temporarily derailed, with a 9-4 loss to Olympia’s Josh Newbill, removing him from the championship bracket and into consolation bouts.

In his third match of the tournament, however, West responded with a pin just 29 seconds into his match against Arlington’s Jake Ferro, setting an Auburn record with 28 pins on the season.

After a 5-3 loss to Chiawana’s Austin Silvers on Saturday, West broke his own record with a pin at 1:19 against South Kitsap’s Michael Beard in the match for seventh-place, finishing the season with 28 pins.

Also competing, but not placing, at Mat Classic XXV for the Trojans were seniors Josh Tate (152 pounds) and Seth Mizoguchi (160), junior Tyson Gaillac (132), sophomore Sam Lindsay (170) and freshman girl wrestler Maritza Parra (106).

Auburn finished 36th in the team competition with 12 points.

Lake Stevens was first with 162 points, with Tahoma finishing second with 120 points.
