Auburn’s Jeff Barkshire pulled off another strong showing on the NASCAR oval.
Barkshire, driving the Centennial Batteries Dodge Charger, finished fifth in the Camping World Series West visit at Iowa Speedway last Friday.
He took home $2,250 for the effort in the Central Iowa Building & Construction Trades 125 around the .875-mile asphalt oval.
David Mayhew took the win in a Chevrolet. Jason Bowles, series points leader, was second in a Ford.
“I’m real proud of my whole crew,” Barkshire said. “It’s hard not to run every week. You don’t have momentum. But it’s real gratifying to show up and be competitive right out of the box, turn some heads and finish well.”
Barshire, competing on a limited budget this season, couldn’t match Mayhew’s dominating performance but was able to stay within striking distance of Bowles and other contenders.
“We were chasing those guys down late in the race,” Barkshire said. “We had pretty much a fifth-place car – that’s all we had for them.”
Barkshire took second at Irwindale, Calif., two months earlier.
The Auburn team plans to compete in next month’s Fall Classic on Yakima’s half-mile oval, then prepare for an all-star race at Irwindale in January.
Good fortune and more sponsorships willing, Barkshire would like to field a full-time ride next year.
“I feel good at where we are right now,” he said. “I feel we are going to put some package together.”
