The Auburn Mountainview baseball team fell 6-5 in extra innings to Seamount League champs Mount Rainier this past Saturday in the South Puget Sound League 3A/Seamount League sub-district tourney at Russell Road fields in Kent.

The Lions found themselves in 2-0 hole early in the game, with the Rams scoring twice in the second inning.

Despite tying the game up at 2-2 in the fourth inning, the Lions soon found themselves down again in the sixth inning when the Rams scored three runs, two on a fielding error.

Auburn Mountainview refused to lay down, however, rallying with two outs in the seventh to tie the game up 5-5, before surrendering a run to Mount Rainier in the ninth.

Brandon Williams got the start for the Lions and was relieved by senior Cody Hebner who was saddled with the loss.

Mount Rainier’s Josh Potter earned the win.

The Lions had nine hits in the contest and committed four errors and the Rams notched 11 hits and committed two errors.

The loss gives Auburn Mountainview the No. 2 seed into the district tournament which begins Tuesday at various sites.

The Lions will play SPSL 3A foes Franklin Pierce (10-6 league, 12-9 overall) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kent Memorial Park.

The Lions and Cardinals have split their two regular season games this year, with Auburn Mountainview winning 6-1 on March 24 and Franklin Pierce beating the Lions 4-1 on April 15.
