BOYS BASKETBALL: Auburn escapes with win against Auburn Riverside

Auburn survived a 67-66 scare from cross-city rivals Auburn Riverside in a South Puget Sound League North Division game this past Friday.

The Trojans (6-2 league, 8-2 overall) overcame a 35-24 deficit at the half to sock away the win over the Ravens (3-4, 5-5).

Senior Jeff Gouveia led the Trojans with 22 points with Isaiah Johnson adding 15. Carlo Lavoie and Jay payne each contributed 11 points. The Ravens were led by junior Ryan Rogers with a game-high 26 points and Mitch Hagerty chipped in with 19.

On Saturday, the Trojans put a 71-44 hurting on Tahoma (0-7, 0-11). The Trojans held the Bears to just 16 first-half points. Gouveia had a game-high 22 points for the Trojans. Lavoie added 13 points and Iszia Johnson had 11 points. Tahoma was led by Christian Behrens with 18 points. … The Auburn Mountainview boys (3-4, 4-6) defeated visiting Sumner (1-5, 2-8) 45-43 this past Saturday. The Lions overcame a 23-19 halftime deficit, and outscored the Spartans 26-20 in the second half. Michael Patenaude led all scorers with 18 points for Auburn Mountainview. Josh Alexander and Javier Alexis each added six points. Sumner was led by Will Bulzomi’s 17 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Trojans squeak by Tahoma in OT

Auburn (2-6 league, 4-7 overall) grabbed its second league win of the season this past Saturday with a 56-48 overtime win against Tahoma (2-5, 4-7).

Knotted at 46-46 at the end of regulation, the Trojans turned up the defensive heat in overtime, holding the Bears to just two points.

Auburn was led by Heather Restrepo who finished with 21 points. Jessica Morgan added eight points. Tahoma was led by Brittani Reiterman with 13 points.

Auburn Riverside (6-1, 8-3 ) continued its march through the SPSL North with an 83-40 thrashing of Auburn this past Friday. The Ravens had five players finish with double-digit scoring, with Nichole Jackson notching a game-high 19 points. Amanda Thomson added 13 points, with Brooklynn Hinkens and Mercedes Wetmore chipping in with 12 points each. Mackenna Clark added 10 points. Jessica Morgan led the Trojans with 10 points. … Stephanie Smolinski’s 25 points were not enough to lift Auburn Mountainview (2-4, 4-4) past Peninsula (3-3, 4-3) this past Friday. The Lions fell to the Seahawks 58-56 in regulation. Smolinski led all scorers with her 25 points, with Lizzy Harrison adding 10 for the Lions. Ida Huners had eight points in the contest. Peninsula was led by Hannah Lekson with 19 points and Ashley Rogers and Jordan Stewart with 14 apiece.
