CROSS COUNTRY: Riverside takes home second place at Westside Classic district meet

The Auburn Riverside boys cross country team will swing into the state 4A cross country meet this weekend in Pasco as the No. 2 seed out of the Westside Classic West Central District III meet.

The Ravens, who came into the district race ranked third in the state coaches poll, were narrowly defeated for the title by Gig Harbor, 75-86, at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood last Saturday.

The latest rankings placed Gig Harbor at No. 3 and Auburn Riverside at No. 5.

Gig Harbor’s Conner Peloquin, who finished 13th at state last year, edged the Ravens’ Kenny Krotzer for second. Peloguin completed the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 39.2 seconds. Krotzer, who was 14th at state last year, followed in 15:44.7.

Central Kitsap’s Shane Moskowitz won the race in 15:30.8.

Senior Auburn Riverside runner Nate Gesell took fourth overall (15:59.3).

Nick Lawrence was 22nd (16:41.4), with fellow Ravens Jeff Miles and Skylar Cowan finishing 25th and 32nd, with times of 16:43.4 and a 16:58.2, respectively. Sophomore Korey Krotzer finished 43rd (17:12.7) and senior Hunter Cowan was 103rd (18:38.5).

The Ravens will compete for the 4A title Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

ALSO: In the boys 3A competition, Auburn Mountianview finished seventh at the Westside Classic. The Lions were paced by senior Nick Lipinski, who finished 25th overall with a time of 16:54.2, followed by sophomore Dylan Summerlin in 27th (16:55.7). Chris Shcharer was 44th, with JJ Jacey and Matt Anderson finishing 55th and 72nd, respectively. Garrett Raphael was 83rd and Aarun Rumbaugh was 87th. The Lions qualified as a team for the state 3A field this weekend in Pasco. …

Auburn’s Cody McCraine, a sophomore, finished 54th overall in the 4A individual district competition with a time of 17:21.8. Teammate Ben Johnson was 73rd (17:33.2) and Elijah Keimig rounded out the Trojan entries with a 86th finish (17:44.4). … In the 4A girls district race, Auburn Riverside finished fifth. Rachel Atwood led the Ravens with a 15th-place finish (19:28.9). Cassidy Brown was 25th and Lauren Saunders was 38th. Megan McCabe, Elise Jones, Emily Morisawa and Jessica Hall all finished in the top 100 and will represent Auburn Riverside at the state meet. … Auburn’s Anna deCarteret was 46th overall with a time of 20:36, just shy of the top-40 cut for state.
