Mac West is no stranger to racing at Pacific Raceways. The Enumclaw High School student competes regularly in E.T. racing at the Kent track in his 1967 Ford Mustang.
That knowledge paid off Saturday as West topped a stellar field of high school racers to win the All High School Drags presented by Primus International, Pep Boys Service & Tire Centers, Green River Community College and Bracketstars.
In the final round, West topped Blayne Zimmerman of Federal Way High School with a .022 reaction time and running 14.405 seconds at 79.5 miles per hour on a 14.1 dial. Zimmerman, the crowd favorite in her bright red 1967 VW, ran 16.31 on a 16.1 dial.
Austin Lenihan, of Redmond, was the lone semifinalist.
A pair of Mustangs faced off in the teacher’s race with Kentwood High School Automotive Instructor Brian Thompson getting the win over the red-lighting “Fast” Dan Sorensen of Green River Community College.
Yakima Jet Funny Car pilot Derek Snelson made two crowd-pleasing passes in the WarHawk, both at over 250 miles per hour. Black Diamond’s Mark Bentley made an exhibition pass in his front-engine dragster and the Westcoast Street Car Association had two qualifying sessions to round out the feature car performers.
For his win, West received a $1,500 scholarship to GRCC and will race one of the NHRA drag racing stars at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals in August
