Western Washington University’s Calley Heilborn, a redshirt freshman outside hitter from Auburn, earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors, the school announced Monday.
Heilborn came up big in her collegiate debut – starting all four matches, all wins – for the No. 3 nationally-ranked Vikings at the West Florida Invitational in Pensacola. She averaged team-highs with 3.50 kills and 4.06 points per set, and also averaged 2.75 digs per set. Heilborn tallied a double-double in three of four matches, including a career-high 20 kills in a four-set victory over Spring Hill College (Mobile, Ala.).
Heilborn was the Gatorade State Player of the Year in 2017 and a three-time state champion at Auburn Riverside High School.
The Vikings defeated a pair of ranked opponents – No. 24 West Florida, No. 13 Wheeling – and three teams that competed in the NCAA Division II Championships last season.
The Vikings remain on the road this week with four matches in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase hosted by Cal Poly Pomona. WWU opens tournament play with a pair of matches on Thursday, facing Cal State Monterey Bay (10 a.m.) and host Cal Poly Pomona (8 p.m). The Vikings will play single matches on Friday (Chaminade, 2:30 p.m.) and Saturday (Hawai’i Hilo, noon) to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule.
All matches in the D2 West Region Showcase will feature live stats and webcast with links available at WWUVikings.com/VB_Watch.
