Auburn Mountainview sophomore Kelly Campbell shot a one-over par 143 to take home second place at the Dec. 30 TPC Las Vegas Challenge golf tournament in Las Vegas.
Campbell, who finished 18th at the state 3A tournament last season, shot a 73 in the first round and came into the second round of play with a one-stroke lead over fellow Washingtonian Vinny Murphy, of Puyallup.
Although Campbell bettered his score in the second round with a 70-stroke performance, it was not enough to hold off Murphy, who shot 68 in the second round and finished even for the tourney.
Campbell finished the tourney with four birdies, 27 pars and five bogeys. Murphy had 8 birdies, including five in the second round, and finished with 21 shots on par and six bogeys.
The TPC Las Vegas Challenge is part of the Future Collegiate World Tour golf series, which gives prep golfers interested in playing college golf a chance to play in front of college coaches.
