Auburn High School’s gymnasium hosted the Northwest Regional Sport Stacking tournament this past Saturday.

More than 300 competitors from throughout the region took part in the eighth annual event, vying for state and regional titles and a shot to move on to the World Sport Stacking Association’s US Nationals Colorado Open, March 24-25.

Several Auburn and Lake Tapps competitors were there, among them first-place winners Gabrielle Rivera, Daisy Ruvalcaba, Caedon Allan, Alondra Garcia, Stephanie Romero, Maria Gonzales and Erica Cunningham.

Invented in the early 1980s by Oceanside, Calif. Boys and Girls Club Program Director Wayne Godinet, sport stacking centers on a set of 12 uniformly-sized cups, placed upside down on a flat surface, stacked in one of three configurations and disassembled quickly. The goal is to complete a stacking cycle in as little time as possible.
