Gallyn Mitchell became the first jockey to ride 1,000 winners at Emerald Downs when he guided Cherokee Echo to a 5¼-length victory in the third race Saturday.
The 45-year-old Mitchell is the only jockey to ride all 13 seasons at Emerald and has finished in the top five every year, including riding titles in 1999 and 2000.
Mitchell accomplished his milestone in his 6,071st mount at Emerald Downs. He has ridden nearly 10 percent of the winners in the track’s history.
Gallon wins Tacoma ’Cap
Gallon, who had done practically everything but win this season, pushed past Fear No Evil late and scored a neck triumph in Sunday’s $50,000 Tacoma Handicap for 3-year-olds.
With Juan Gutierrez riding at 118 pounds, Gallon ran one mile in 1:36 3/5 on a sweltering afternoon and paid $4.40, $3 and $2.40. Jim Penney is the trainer for owners Michael and Amy Feuerborn of Maple Valley.
For Penney, it was his 400th victory at Emerald Downs and his 32nd stakes victory.
