Sheen Falls reels in foes, captures Saturday feature race at Emerald Downs

Sheen Falls swallowed the opposition Saturday, cruising from last to first to a 2 ¾-length victory in the $11,950 Cobra Roofing Purse for fillies and mares at Emerald Downs.

With Javier Matias aboard, Sheen Falls completed the six furlongs in 1:09.80 with a handsome payout of $38.20, $13.60, and $6.00. It was trainer Steve Fisher’s first victory of the meet and fifth win in 21 races for 2009.

The betting favorite, This September, ridden by Gallyn Mitchell, led into the stretch and finished second for $3.40 and $2.80. Dawns a Breakin, with Cassie Papineau in the irons, ran third for a $2.80 show payoff.

A 4-year-old filly, Sheen Falls, capitalized on a grueling first quarter (:21.60) set by My Thistle, then circled the field to a clear win. Sheen Falls, who shipped in from Northern California, hadn’t run at Emerald Downs since placing second in a 2007 maiden-claiming race.
