For the Reporter
Already a triple stakes winner at the meet, So Lucky heads a list of 2-year-olds nominated to the $65,000 Gottstein Futurity on Sunday, Sept. 11.
To be run at 1 1/16 miles, the Gottstein is the 28th and final stakes of the 2016 season and the traditional closing day feature race.
So Lucky is among a handful of runners being considered for Horse of the Meeting and several other year-end honors. A Washington-bred by Coast Guard, So Lucky is undefeated in four starts including stakes wins of 3, 5¼ and 9 lengths. He put up Beyers of 71 in the Emerald Express, and 79 in both the WTBOA Lads and Washington Cup – easily the top three figures of any horse nominated to the Gottstein.
With the exception of Assets Included, none of nominees have raced farther than six furlongs. A British Columbia-bred son of Rosberg, Assets Included is 2-for-2 and scored a three-quarter-length victory in the 6½-furlong BC Cup Nursery last month at Hastings Racecourse.
Three fillies are nominated, Afleet Hope, No Talking Back and Barbara Shinpoch Stakes winner Blazinbeauty. In its 78-year history, only 12 fillies have won the Gottstein including Smarty Deb (2007) and Talk to My Lawyer (2011) at Emerald Downs.
