Jockey Marcelo Martinez wasted no time finding the winner’s circle at Emerald Downs.
The 30-year-old Northwest newcomer rode Soul Intent to a 7-to-1 upset Saturday in the Auburn High School 60th Reunion Purse for 3-year-olds and up.
Soul Intent ran one mile in 1:38.70 on a fast track and paid $16.20, $6 and $3.20. Robbie Baze trains the winner for owner Valentin Garcia.
Just Like Uptown, the 8-to-5 betting favorite ridden by Leslie Mawing, finished one length behind the winner and paid $3.40 and $3.
Kamaaina Blue, ridden by Rocoo Bowen, rallied from last to finish third and paid $3. Epic Electorate, White River Pirate and Improviso completed the order of finish.
Born March 19, 1984 in Mexico City, Martinez previously rode in Florida and Ohio, notching two victories at Beulah Park. Martinez, also an exercise rider, said he plans to ride at Emerald Downs the remainder of the meet and perhaps come back in 2014.
A 4-year-old Perfect Soul colt bred in Ontario, Canada, Soul Intent earned $3,245 for the victory, and has a career mark of 21-3-2-3 with earnings of $21,320. Saturday, he alternated the lead with Epic Electorate, lugged out on the turn to drop two lengths behind Just Like Uptown, and then re-rallied late for the victory.
