Three Auburn Mountainview grapplers – Brahm Trujillo, Dylan Foley and Dakota Weir – are still in the hunt for placings after the first day of the Mat Classic XXVI 3A Wrestling Championships Friday at the Tacoma Dome.

Trujillo, a 120-pound freshman, is undefeated with a pin at 1 minute, 6 seconds against Everett junior Bryan Sanchez and a pin at 3:13 against Mount Si senior Eli Clure in the first two rounds.

Trujillo faces off at 10:10 a.m. Saturday against Sunnyside senior Jesse Barrajas, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the state, according to washingtonwrestlingreport.com. Barrajas is a three-time state placer and won the 113-pound 3A state title last year.

Foley, a 126-pound sophomore, defeated Stanwood senior Jacob Cole with a pin at the 4:35 mark in the first round and notched a 9-4 decision over Glacier Peak junior Jon Kim.

Foley looks to stay alive in the winner’s bracket with a 10:20 a.m. match Saturday against Shorewood senior Matthew Floresca, the returning second-place finisher at 120 pounds last year. Floresca, a three-time state placer, is the No. 1 ranked 126-pounder this season.

Alive in the consolation bracket is returning state competitor Weir, a 285-pound senior. Weir is 2-1 through three rounds, with wins against Kennedy Catholic sophomore Eddie Benge – a fall at 2:42 – and Kelso senior Garett Fix – a fall at 2:26.

Weir’s loss came in the second round with a pin at the hands of Hanford senior Jeff Weyand.

Weir will continue his quest for third place with a 11:20 a.m. match Saturday against Lincoln senior J.J. Saili.

Also competing Friday for Auburn Mountainview were sophomore Joey Santos, junior David Boone and sophomore Antonio Corea.

Corea went 0-2 in the 220-pound bracket, coming up short to Bellevue junior Alec Palander and Eastside Catholic junior Conner Heger.

Boone went 1-2 at 152 pounds with a 11-4 win against Mountlake Terrace junior Daniel Oliferovskiy and losses to Hudson’s Bay wrestlers Gunnar Metzgar and Aaron Blaine.

Santos was 1-2 at 138 pounds with a 5-2 decision over Everett junior Mike Allred and losses to Bainbridge Island sophomore Jack Miller and Shadle Park senior Connor Kerr.

The Lions were in 14th place in the team competition at the end of the first day with 28 points. Decatur was first with 62 points.

Day two of Mat Classic XXVI gets under way at 10 a.m. at the Tacoma Dome.
