Auburn Mountainview remained undefeated with a 33-20 win over rival Bonney Lake in the South Puget Sound League 3A opener at Sunset Chev Stadium on Friday.
“It’s always good to beat Bonney Lake, they’ve kind of become our rival,” said fourth-year Liond coach Jared Gervais. “We’ve always played them pretty close since I’ve been here. Every game has always been close to the wire. Last year they beat us, this year was kind of back and forth.”
The Lions (1-0 league, 3-0 overall) expanded on a 16-12 halftime lead with 14 points in the third quarter and three in the fourth to slip past the Panthers (0-1, 1-2).
Junior quarterbac Gresch Jensen threw for one touchdown, ran for a second and returned an interception 54 yards for a third. Jensen finished with 14-of-26 passing for 121 yards an interception and a touchdown. He also ran the ball 13 times for 104 yards and a TD.
Junior Vaughn Daggs caught four passes for 37 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown pass. Senior Nate Hardin added 78 rushing yards, including a 6-yard scoring run, and Devon Tandberg booted field goals of 33 and 37 yards.
“It was a great game. It was really fun,” Gervais said. “For us, we’ve got to work on the penalty thing and not give up so many free yards.”
The Lions were penalized 13 times for 143 yards.
“We’re doing some things well, but we’ve got to keep getting better,” Gervais said. “The league’s only going to keep getting tougher. This week we’ve got Sumner (who went to the state 2A tourney the past two years), then Riverside. After that, Peninsula, Lakes (ranked No. 6 in the state AP poll) and Auburn. It’s not going to get any easier, so we’ve got to keep getting better and cleaning stuff up.”
Auburn Mountainview hosts Sumner (1-0, 3-0) at 7 p.m. this Thursday.
